Michelle Thompson is a British collage artist and illustrator based in Saffron Walden. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, she works across analogue and digital processes, combining found imagery, vintage ephemera and fragmented text to explore identity, memory, nostalgia and the female experience. Alongside a long career in editorial illustration for clients including The New York Times, The Guardian, TIME and Penguin Books, Thompson has exhibited internationally, including at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition. Her work often obscures or interrupts faces, questioning ideas of visibility, control and representation.
‘These collages draw on vintage domestic imagery and advertising slogans to explore identity, control and the expectations historically placed on women. Using found material, fragmented text and obscured faces, the works interrupt familiar narratives and question how identity is shaped through language, image and repetition. Moving between analogue collage and digital processes, Michelle Thompson creates compositions that feel both nostalgic and uneasy. The act of covering, cropping and censoring becomes a way of exploring visibility and absence, suggesting figures that are present yet partially withheld. Created for David Parr House, the works respond to ideas of domestic space, memory and social history.’
