Clare Curtis’ early life was spent in Essex and Suffolk. She attended art school in Scotland where she studied Illustration and Printmaking. After graduating, she worked in London establishing herself as an illustrator before returning to her hometown on the Suffolk coast to focus on printmaking.   

Throughout her career, Curtis has worked and collaborated with individuals who share her enthusiasm for printing, illustration and design.  She has made artwork for book covers, packaging, murals and textiles and collaborated with different print studios to make limited edition prints and merchandise for the V&A, the Hepworth Wakefield museum and the National Portrait Gallery.  

Curtis is chiefly a lino cutter but also known for her lithographs and screen prints. Using traditional printing methods plates, blocks and screens are drawn or cut by hand, each colour being printed separately to create distinctive, original artwork.  

Curtis’ passion for British 20th-century art and design inspires her approach to her printmaking and illustration. Her personal work has become more dominated by exploring her own, and the nation’s, relationship with plants and gardening and how that love has influenced British art and artists.
