Walter Hoyle - a versatile artist

This book tells the story of Hoyle's career and includes his own account of life in Great Bardfield and his relationships with fellow artists. It also features contributions from Denise Hoyle, Chloe Cheese, Emma Mason, and Martin Salisbury.

Walter Hoyle studied at Beckenham School of Art and the Royal College of Art.

In 1952, he moved to Great Bardfield, Essex, encouraged by his friend Edward Bawden following their successful painting trip to Sicily. He exhibited his work in the three Great Bardfield art exhibitions of 1954, 1955, and 1958. At the first exhibition, he met his future wife, Denise, and they remained in the area for the next twenty years, raising their children, James and Nina.

Throughout his life, Walter balanced his own artistic practice with commercial commissions and teaching. After teaching at St Martin's School of Art and the Central School of Art, he joined Cambridge School of Art in 1964, where he taught printmaking until his retirement in 1984.

Following retirement, Walter and Denise moved to Hastings and spent time at their flat in Dieppe. His work encompassed an impressive range of styles and media, from watercolour landscapes to abstract and experimental prints, reflecting his versatility as an artist.
