Earlier this year, we visited designer Michael Marriott at his studio in Dalston to speak about the new furniture he has made for the Visitor Centre.
‘My inspiration for the new pieces came from the bonkers and multi-era fireplace surround in the Visitor Centre that was rescued from the F R Leach City Road Workshops. I imagine it was slung together in tea breaks while the kettle was brewing. This fireplace has so much life and love in it. It feels like a very alive and unusual piece of woodwork. I wanted to carry on with that spirit and try and bring that to what I was going to make so my work would sit alongside the fireplace and respect it.’
‘My work is new and a contemporary addition that relates to the House and the Visitor Centre in a material way. Like the fireplace surround, it is made out of offcuts and leftovers. Environmentally, that’s the best thing to do. Nowadays it’s the only thing to do.’
